Icons & images that will lead you to life and love. Wednesday July the 31st ~ The Aston Martinis play several sets deep beneath the CBD for Swingin' at the Speakeasy from 7 til 10, then I take it til the end. All is free. Saturday August the 3rd ~ Like countless others I've been devastated to hear this week that Doris Goddard, the mischievous matriarch of our fabled and adored community institution the Hollywood Hotel, has departed this mortal coil. The witty and whip-smart larrikin culture she engendered and encouraged in Sydney is so rarely witnessed in this era - yet Doris was indefatigable in fostering creativity, compassion and independence in our midst. Recently I've been so honoured and eager to begin a new weekly residency at her illustrious pub from this very Saturday. I will likely be but one of a million marvellous souls offering art and energy in Doris' name now, such was her iconic status amongst a huge swathe of our most ardent artists - all of whom will fairly wish to raise a toast. We're getting the ball rolling from the afternoon on: featuring one of the hotel's most regular performers Christa Hughes, reminiscing about the sheer passion and gall of this pioneering actress, musician and publican (and also covering one of Doris' most timely tunes The Wowsers) on Jack Off, between 3 and 5PM on FBi Radio. Afterwards please join us (and half of Sydney's best rabble-rousers I expect) at the Hollywood Hotel from 9PM til close - for an extended set dedicated to Doris and the passion, integrity and hilarity that she embodied. Christa will no-doubt reprise at least one Goddard number live - and frankly bloody anything could happen and probably will. Let's slay Slurry anew with sheer spirit and bonhomie then bear our jubilant defiance ever onward. Free for all! Sunday August the 4th ~ Come Sunday we will wind down from that monumental affair by stepping sideways to Cottonmouth Records in Enmore, for another extended evening of fresh musical breadth. Last time I played here I genuinely hit it off with DJ Albo - who'd been having the time of his life selecting vinyl all arvo - and his equally wax-addicted mate Tony Burke (whose wife now only permits him to shop on Record Store Day). Cottonmouth has become another invaluable outpost of inclusion and curiosity for me already - so I've decided to share my set with a friend of myriad talents who I feel deserves to be heard more often. Head along from 7PM to witness the immaculate record collection of Autralia's premiere stencil artist - being spun under the guise of DJ Boo Boo Muck. By around 8 I will be along to contrast the shabby quality of my old op-shop fare via some track-for-track exchanges, thence you'll be stuck with old Shitty here til the stroke of midnight. As with all our endeavours this week, entry is entirely free! Comments are closed.
