Perhaps it is not so strange then that he has played at parties that mark the end of a difficult divorce - or the beginning of a new life. However the single greatest responsibility he has ever felt amongst all his roles in aural care-taking has been presiding over songs that mark the loss of a loved one. Many dear friends have departed this mortal coil and many more have gathered to mourn and remember them.
Given the passion for life, love and music that imbued so many of these souls it was not surprising that the extended families involved sought to venerate such spirits - with sincerity, humility, humour and joy. Tears pour out of us but we console one another, uplifting our own and proffering a faithful reflection of the nature of the departed. It was fate that called on Jack - to play songs that these people loved, songs that told their story, songs that swept everyone up and affirmed how lucky we are, even as we acknowledge that our lives will one day end.
