Bittersweet blooms & tender tunes to fill & farewell... Tuesday September the 9th ~ Pop pollination of yore at Palmer & Co from 10 til 2 Friday September the 12th ~ Monthly magic materialises again as Hot Shit manifest Shiny Shiny at the Hotel Hollywood. 8 til 1 Saturday September the 13th ~ Another seething and scathing episode of Jack Off airs on fbi between 3 and 5 before Hot Flush and I reunite for the unimaginably momentous task of farewelling The Midnight Special on its final night. I highlighted the ignominious manner in which these heroic pioneers of bar culture have been displaced on the radio last week. It's unfathomable to me that an accommodation could not somehow be reached with the new owners of the building, that might have permitted this much-touted female-owned business to depart gracefully and on their own terms in due course - but it seems that hospitality just ain't that hospitable in our small scene yet sadly. Consequently this brilliant community-minded trio are obliged to wrap up trade forthwith. Obviously far more people wish to salute them and farewell the Spesh than can fit within their walls in the few days that remain, so I'd suggest joining the funeral procession Son from Terza Madre has organised on Friday night, if you want to mark this death via collective ritual. Meet at The Hub at 7.30 then. Following that live music finale, if you can somehow gain entry (it's free) for the bar's last service on Saturday evening, Hot Shit will serve up songs of superlative spirit during our extended tribute set, from 7 til 11. There'll be more music spun before and after also, then the whole noble enterprise will be wiped by this brutal etch-a-sketch of a town. Sunday September the 14th ~ Hopefully, amongst all of this carnage/chaos, you'll be able to preserve a semblance of sanity by viewing the unhinged flicks being screened by the Sydney Underground Film Festival in Newtown this weekend. I've abandoned my sacrosanct silent observance of the Sabbath at home to instead worship at the feet of Annapurna Sriram, the diabolical States-based director of closing film Fucktoys. After she introduces the screening in the Dendy we'll be staging a Closing Party at Bootleggers, soundtracked by sage sex and work songs of all stripes - with an emphasis on utter trash! Sacrifice yr Sunday and shake the curse of this place free! Comments are closed.
